Algarve – 5 reasons to choose the Algarve as a sailing destination

Algarve, Sailing Holidays

The Algarve is an excellent sailing holiday destination. Sun, sea, safety, food and culture all rolled into one region in Portugal. Normally people look for the typical (busy) destination: Greece, Turkey and Croatia on the top of the list. Have you haver thought in the Algarve as a valid option? Here are my top 5 reasons why you should really consider the Algarve as your sailing destination.

1 – Connections and price

Several companies are connecting Faro and Amsterdam, Schiphzl, Barcelona, Basel, Belfast, Berlin, Birmingham, Bordeaux, Bournemouth, Bremen, Bristol, Brussels, Charleroi, Cardiff, Copenhagen, Cork, Doncaster, Dublin, Dusseldorf, Dusseldorf, Edinburgh, Eindhoven, Exeter, Frankfurt, Frankfurt, Geneva, Glasgow International, Groningen, Hamburg, Hannover, Kerry County, Leeds, Lille, Lisboa, Liverpool, London – 6 airports, Londonderry, Luxembourg, Lyon, Madrid, Manchester, Marseille, Memmingen, Munich, Nantes, Newcastle, Nottingham, East Midlands, Nuremberg, Oslo – Gardermoen, Paris – 3 airports, Ponta Delgada, Porto, Prague, Prestwick, Rotterdam, Shannon, Southampton, Stockholm – Arland, Stuttgart, Toronto, Pearson, Toulouse, Blagnac, Vienna, Zurich.

Convinced? There are plenty connections and most of them are kept all year round.

2 – Nature and well protected coastline

I know that we have over-build places such as Albufeira and Portimão, result of the 70´s lack of rules and organization of the territory. However, there are other places such as Tavira, Cacela, Castro Marim or Alcoutim, that still have that genuine touch. There is a great natural scenery waiting to be discovered in Costa Vicentina such as Amoreira beach or the 5 star surf destination, Amado beach. Have you ever heard about Culatra Island that seems lost in time in a way and ahead of it in others. You will surely appreciate it’s unique and picturesque fishing community and the 7 km of dune (incipient, foredune and hind dunes) where (even in August) you will find your private piece of sand.

3 – Sheltered anchorages

There are several natural salt water lagoons such as Ria Formosa, Ria de Alvor and great rivers in Portimão and Ferragudo – rio Arade and of course the fantastic Guadiana, where you can just drop your anchor.

Don’t get me wrong we have great marinas, but you can also enjoy the wild side of cruising sometimes. Even in August, yes it is true, there is always spare room.

4 – Food

If you like slow food prepared with delicious ingredients, this is the right place to visit. It is here in the south, that you will find the best sardines and mackerel ever. If you are a big fan of fresh fish, don’t forget the tuna, bream and bass and keep in mind that you can find it all year long. You shouldn’t also miss the clams, cuttlefish or the tasty oysters from ria Formosa. Do you already know Manuel? Check our team if you want to know him better, but let me just say that his main job is to collect oysters and clams. Ready to try raw oysters with lemon? What about Portuguese sparkling wine (vinho verde)? A match made in heaven!

5 – Algarve Cruising Centre

Because we are great. Fantastic! And of course this is the main reason you should come over. Beside that?

We stand for a responsible way of traveling and follow ecotourism principles.

We run a variety of programs to fulfil your needs. From sailing courses, sailing expeditions or mile building programs on a cabin charter basis, to skippered charters. Not forgetting powerboat courses and powerboat rentals starting in Faro.

Our courses have 3 to 4 participants, maximum. As for a minimum? Well we accept… 1 student!

Don’t forget you´ll have your own cabin. We do not run courses or trips with people sleeping on the galley – maybe me, not you.

We are passionate about the local food and people. In fact, we are locals delighted to share our culture and tradition. Expect authentic Mediterranean Food cooked aboard. Fresh fish, juicy tomatoes, appetising olive oil and the best cake on earth. Yes, you won’t be getting pizza and bread with cheese sandwiches every day for lunch.

Think twice before booking your next sailing holiday.

We are indeed a small company, that besides being huge in expertise, wants to keep it simple (and small): Where every client, student or visitor gets to be treated as a real mate!
